DESCRIPTION:
Join Rushmore for an evening of light hiking, sun setting & moon gazing from Discovery Point at Crater Lake National Park.
The Discovery Point Trail (2 miles round trip) and the first .75 miles of the Garfield Peak Trail.
Moderate 1.6 mile hike to along the Discovery Point Trail on the rim of Crater Lake. Discovery Point is connected the main parking lot at the Rim. This is one of the best locations to view the sunset at the National Park. Lots of great photo opportunities.

A variety of trails are available at Crater Lake National Park. You may have the opportunity to explore some of these below.
The Watchman Fire Lookout is the only fire lookout on the rim of the caldera. Watch the moon rise from the eastern horizon. You can almost feel the Earth in motion.
The Discovery Point Trail is a breathtaking viewpoint from which to watch as the sun goes down over the Cascade Mountain Range. In addition, the Watchman Overlook, a parking area with wooden fences 3.8 miles (6.1 km) northwest of Rim Village offers an unmatched view of Wizard Island, a cinder cone that erupted out of Crater Lake approximately 7,300 years ago.
To find this unmarked pullout, drive 3.8 miles (6.1 km) west of Rim Village and look for a viewpoint lined with wooden fences.

Along the rim is perfect for star gazing. From the edge of the rim, you will experience horizon to horizon of stars. Dress warmly, as temperatures drop at night. You might encounter someone out with a telescope. They might even enjoy sharing knowledge and equipment. Try not to shine any lights in their eyes.
HIKING THE CLEETWOOD COVE TRAIL:
The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal access to the shore of Crater Lake. It is open until 9 pm, and is currently open. The hike is steep and strenuous: in 1.1 miles (1.7 km) it drops 700 feet (213 meters) in elevation. Walking back up is equivalent to climbing 65 flights of stairs!
The trail is recommended only for those in good physical condition. It should not be attempted by anyone with heart, breathing, or walking problems. It is not accessible for people with mobility impairments. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and carry water. Vault toilets are located at the top and bottom of the trail.
